Katarina Szulenyiova
Asia Regional Manager in Seedstars World

Social Entrepreneur

In this class Katarina gives us new perspective of finding reason to build a startup in an approriate ways.
According to Katarina’s opinion, startup doesn’t have to be a high technology. Oh, yeah- by the way Katarina is an Asia Regional Manager in Seedstars World. Since Seedstars is a Swiss-based startup with the mission to find, connect, and invest in the top seed stage startups in emerging markets, so this class talks about how important our startup can solve our environment’s problem.
Katarina shown us some of startups in emerging markets. Most of it has criteria that not so up-to-date technology. While in many countries people nowadays used to use a card even just for smartphones, in Phillippines, most of people in here doesn’t have any atm, debit, or credit card. Therefore, someone made a product that enabled people to transfer money by phone. So not every country have same needs about their problem.

Lesson for Today : Networking is Important too!

Attending the international event such as MaGIC 2016 is the first time in my life. There is one thing I learned from this event, are those who participated in this event expanding social network with other participants. Some participants do during the seminar, and other do during break lunch. Once the connected, the exchange their business card to keep in touch.

I met a lot of a great people at this event. Starting from employees at large companies, entrepreneurs, CEOs, students, and much more. In addition, I can see the ambition of each participant were very high to get knowledge in this event and also they want to apply it in their lives. Starting from this event, I can learn from those who have experience and if I have another chance, I will expand my social network too.

DESIGN THINKING FOR NON-DESIGNERS by Jerome Axle Brown (Entrepreneurship Track)

During the workshop, we had a lot fun activities. Jerome Axle Brown as a speaker let us to be more talkative and realize how a design thinking take a important part for our enterprise. He ask the audience to give a positive vibes like a suggestion for each other dream about our imagine future enterprise (it used to be more useful by noticing other people advices).

Design Thinking for Non-Designer

12.00 - 01.00 PM : Design Thinking for Non-Designer by Jerome "Axle" Brown

He came from USA and studied Medicine at Johns Hopkins University. Even so, he is very expert in designing mind. He’s really inspiring us, he taught us how to design our ambitions for the next three years.
  • First, we draw our ambitions at a blank sheet. After that he called several people to share what they draw before.
  • After that, we sharing with friends behind us about our ambitions. In this section, we tell about our ambitions in next three years and then our friend will say “Do it” and they gave us a support.
  • The last, we set up a group of four people. Here we retell our ambitions, and some people will gave you advise or support to us. After this session, we feel re-energized to achieve our ambitions and increasingly get an idea of what will do later.

Lunch Break

1:00 PM - 2:00 PM: LUNCHBREAK

BREAK TIME YEAAAY!!! Time for us to have our lunch, well- actually we’re really waiting for it since we’re so hungry that time and ofc~ we need to recharging for next sections. Foods get! But we don’t take any drink yet, so we’re queue for coffee latte. Thinking of coffee latte remind us to the first section SERIOUSLY SPEAKING: WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?” by Rebecca Scott. Long queue don’t let us to give up! (btw- the barista is so handsome omooo oppa >_____<)

Getting Startups Past The Infancy Stage

At that time, Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 10:15-11:45 am at Malaysia Room MAGIC in progress workshop under the title “Getting Startups Past The Infacy Stage” with speaker Andreas Bezamat. Andreas Bezamat is Business Development & Growth for Outlook Mobile at Microsoft.

Many startups will be pleased to have applications to utilize and allow them to reach out and engage with their customers, but may not know how to go about developing one. Andreas Bezamat – Microsoft quite worthy of Homer to give the help they need. Every startup that never like to develop applications or who already have an applications but want to make it better of course get so many benefits of joining this workshop.

Although the sound of Andreas when were talking small sounds and rhythms that quite quickly, but there are some materials that can be understood by participants including: “Basic Tenets of Mobile Growth”. There are 9 main point :
1.      You have to earn every user
2.      Retention is king: sustainable growth requires healthy retention
3.      Understand and leverage the lopsided app store game
4.      There is no such thing as a silver buller
5.      OEM preinstalls are important, but will not solve all your problems
6.      Growth wins are incremental but should compound over time
7.      You must be constantly testing, learning, and optimizing
8.      First to scale wins, not first to market
9.      Your work never ends.

Another important point is doing a weekly sprints that contain schedules performed together team every week. It is important to maintain cohesiveness, unity and precision performance of the team. Other things is put your customers first. As said by Jan Koum, CEO & Co-founder of WhatsApp : “There’s not enough money and not enough celebrities in the world to convince people to use a shitty product. People are so savvy these days. People expect a good user experience.” And well last point is “Int’l Growth: Experts on the Ground”. At this point, understanding ecosystem in new geos is key.

LET’S SOLVE PROBLEM!!

This time, Kerk Kee gave us some quiz. No- It’s not like quiz, more like a game! First, he asked for problems to audiences. At that time we have 2-3 problems. Here we started! In this state we do interaction between audiences. 1 shared her/his problem and the other try to solved it. In the main time the quiz is done and Kerk Kee concluding what we’ve done. The point is, every problem has much ways to solved it depend on our view on the problem and what do we want to get from solving it. Customer need and urgent social problem are main views we should consider during solving the problem.

That’s closing our section with Kerk Kee.

Creativity VS Innovation

Before attending this section, writer thinking that “creativity” and “innovation” is same. But- the answer is NO! Kerk Kee mentioned the main points on this seminar.

Creativity is only the first step of a long journey. Creativity ideas is at conceptual step, we’ve got it everyday on our 3B. Why people ofter got failed on developing their ideas? Because their not doing the implementation. That called “Innovation”

The Importance of Innovation in Fulfilling A Need

10:15 AM - 11:45 AM: THE IMPORTANCE OF INNOVATION IN FULFILLING A NEED by Kerk Kee

We went into “Map Space” room and attending the second session. One point that writer really remember is when Kerk Kee mentioning 3B’s to finding idea.

B: Bath
B: Bed
B: Bus

He said something like, “you should sleep more, taking a bath longer, and sitting on bus for a long time”
Everyone laugh.... it’s more like we’re done nothing, right?? But- after that he emphasize the point of these 3B. The more time we’re lessing our muscle to move, the more time we let our brain to thinking much. That’s solve the mystery about why we always full of ideas in our dream, at the bath, or when we’re on the way alone.

Q&A Session in Rebecca Scott's Seminar (1)

At the first workshop, we hosted by Rebbecca Scott as the first talk. She was inspired the original idea from a cafe in Vietnam. It was to use street child overthere. She thought that if 1 cafe can help 20 homeless young people, then what about 2 cafe? So after a long run, she wondered that how much godness can we squezee into a a cup of coffe? The point we can learn a lot from her is making our enterprise personal. It really help to make we think about as much godness we can get out of our product service.

How Much Good Things That Can You Squished Into A Cup of Coffee?

We’ve got our coffee latte and eating our lunch happily. Truthfully speaking that writer not really like coffee, but- Rebecca Scott have her own way to made writer got interested on it. Every drops of this delicious coffee latte made us keep energized for the next sections to go. (I even got “love” from barista oppa hihi ^^v)
